Gardeners Abbey Wood is committed to providing a safe working environment for all staff, contractors and those who use or visit the gardens we maintain. This Health and Safety policy sets out the principles and systems we use to manage risk across our gardening services, whether routine garden maintenance, landscaping or seasonal planting in the local service area. The purpose of this policy is to reduce injury, prevent harm to health and protect property and the environment while delivering reliable gardening services.

Our primary objectives are to identify hazards, assess the associated risks and implement proportionate controls. The policy applies to all workers employed by the Abbey Wood gardening team, temporary staff and approved contractors. It also guides subcontractors and clients on expected standards for safe site access, plant handling and chemical use. We aim to combine practical risk management with continuous improvement to keep landscaping operations efficient and safe.

Responsibility and roles

Management retains overall accountability for health and safety. Team leaders and senior gardeners are assigned day-to-day responsibility for implementing safe working practices and ensuring site-specific risk assessments are understood and followed. Individual staff members have a duty to work safely, report hazards and use agreed controls. Key responsibilities include:

• Management: policy review, resource provision and monitoring;
• Supervisors: ensuring safe systems of work, training and PPE provision;
• Staff: adherence to procedures, reporting incidents and maintaining equipment.

Risk assessment and safe systems

All tasks performed by Abbey Wood gardeners and our local gardening teams are subject to documented risk assessments. These are maintained for common activities such as hedge cutting, tree work, chemical application, use of powered tools and manual handling. Safe systems of work are developed from these assessments and include method statements for higher risk operations and a permit-to-work approach for complex jobs. Control measures follow a hierarchy: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Training, competence and supervision

Staff competence is central to delivering safe gardening services. All employees receive induction training on company policies, local site rules and emergency procedures. Site access is controlled to protect the public from garden machinery and work zones are segregated with signage and barriers where appropriate. Vehicle movements are planned to minimise reversing and pedestrian interaction, and vehicles are parked considerately to avoid obstruction.

Incident reporting, first aid and emergency response

First aid kits and trained first aiders are available on sites according to assessed needs. Emergency response plans include procedures for serious injury, fire or chemical spill and are communicated to all staff.

Monitoring and continuous improvement: We review health and safety performance regularly through site visits, audits and routine inspections. Policies and procedures are updated to reflect lessons learned and changes in operations.
